So eyeliner, to wear it or not to wear it, does it really make a difference, so many to choose from, how do I apply it etc.... I personally LOVE eyeliner, it draws people to your eyes and they really don’t know why (especially men). I will say some women are lucky enough to have thick upper and lower lashes and really don’t need it except for a special evening, for the record we hate you...just kidding, but for the rest of us it needs to be added to your daily makeup routine. There are 3 basic types of eyeliner with a wild card special, liquid liner, pencil liner, cream liner and surprise....eye shadow as eyeliner.
Liquid Eyeliner

As much as I love the look of it liquid liner is the most difficult to apply. It is very bold, yet it is liquid. Its’ not for beginners, to apply you will need a steady hand, patience and practice; it is easier to apply in short strokes. Start in the middle of your closed eyelid and get as close to the lash line as possible. Move out towards the end of the eye and slowly start at the beginning of the eye and retrace it. You can’t rush this, but if you do it right it makes a statement. Liquid liner comes in the basic colors black, brown, blue and even sparkle. Liquid liner is best for those days when you want to make a statement or be more dramatic, like a cat eye, not usually for daytime but it can still be done.
Pencil Eyeliner

Pencil eyeliners are the most commonly used liner as it is very easy to manage and control. Pencil eyeliners are just like any other pencil that you sharpen when needed. To apply, you need to draw the line close to your lash line as possible. It is a lot easier to control then liquid liner. The sharper your pencil, the sharper you line, you can also smudge it to give the smoke effort or soft look. It comes in the most colors and is the most cost effective. The most important thing about pencil liners is to test it on your hand, the easier it is to write on your hand the easier you want it to write on and near your eye. For day time go with a softer more natural color like brown, dark brown or for a touch of spice bronze, for evening go black or blue. A secret....white liner on the inside of your bottom lash widens and brightens your eyes shhhhh.....don’t tell anybody.

Cream (Gel) Eyeliner

The cream liner has been used more by professional makeup artists than the mainstream public, but it is becoming more common. Cream eyeliners generally come in a pot that you can dip an angled brush, fine tip brush in to get the product out. It can even be used as a creamy base underneath eye shadows. It generally comes in about the same colors as liquid liner does. If you use a brush to apply, you will need a slightly steady hand as it is creamy and glides pretty easily. It is a little easier to use then liquid but it has similar results as liquid liner, now it does takes a bit longer to dry, but it is great for smudging along the lash line, very creamy and easy to smudge, great for smokey eyes, but not as portable as a pencil eyeliner. Cream liners tend to be a little pricy but you will get bang for your buck.
Eyeshadow as an Eyeliner

So last and for now least, using your eyeshadow as an eyeliner. This is the most creative out of all of the types of liners. This is also the fastest and easiest way to line your lashes all you need is a stiff angled brush. To apply, simply dip your brush into the eyeshadow of your choice and draw or smudge along the upper and/or lower lashline. Eyeshadow lining is great for a more subtle daytime look. Plus, the color possibilities are endless! You could even use the pencil brush to smudge the eyeshadow on top of another eyeliner to get rid of any harsh lines, unfortunately it doesn’t last as long as the others. The key is to use pigment rich eyeshadows.

So ladies, there you have it, the breakdown about eyeliners, just remember, no matter what you choose to work with it takes practice and if you don’t like it you can always wipe it off. Take a chance. Until next time...
